The United States has confirmed that the next round of Israel Lebanon talks will take place in Rome, Italy, from August 4 to 6 as both sides continue efforts to implement a US mediated framework agreement aimed at reducing tensions along the border. The negotiations are expected to focus on Israel’s planned withdrawal from southern Lebanon, unresolved border disputes, and measures to strengthen long term regional security.
According to a US State Department official, technical teams from both countries will work on advancing the implementation of the existing agreement. Discussions will include expanding the current pilot zone process, resolving remaining border issues, and moving toward a broader peace and security arrangement. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had previously announced that Rome would host the upcoming negotiations.
The framework agreement was introduced after fighting erupted between Israel and the Iran backed group Hezbollah in March. The deal calls for an end to hostilities in Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese Army across southern regions, the disarmament of Hezbollah under agreed conditions, and the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from designated pilot zones.
Israeli officials are now preparing to leave two of these pilot areas, marking another step in implementing the agreement. US officials believe that the experience gained from the initial zones will help improve future withdrawals and allow the process to expand gradually across other parts of southern Lebanon.
Despite progress, challenges remain. The Lebanese Army has accused Israel of continuing military operations in southern Lebanon, claiming that ongoing airstrikes and artillery fire have slowed the full deployment of Lebanese troops. Beirut has also reported intermittent attacks despite the overall decline in fighting.
The upcoming Israel Lebanon talks are viewed as an important opportunity to address outstanding concerns and reinforce the ceasefire framework. Diplomats hope the discussions will reduce the risk of renewed conflict, improve border stability, and create conditions for a more lasting peace between the two neighboring countries. The outcome of the Rome meeting could play a significant role in shaping security and diplomatic relations across the region.
