US President Donald Trump has expressed his gratitude toward Iran’s leadership for cancelling what he claimed were plans for mass executions of protesters. According to Trump, over 800 executions were originally scheduled following the violent crackdown on protests across Iran. In a message on social media, Trump praised Tehran’s decision, calling it “greatly respected” and a positive step toward easing tensions in the country.

While Iran has not publicly confirmed or denied the cancellation of the executions, Trump’s statement came amidst reports of calming unrest in the capital, Tehran. Residents of Tehran reported that the city had remained relatively quiet for several days, signaling a possible easing of tensions. This follows widespread protests that began in December over economic hardships and calls for an end to the ruling government, which led to violent clashes and a heavy security response. According to some reports, the unrest claimed more than 2,000 lives, making it the worst domestic turmoil in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Despite the retreating prospect of a US military strike, tensions remain high. The US has continued to deploy military assets to the region, and American officials have indicated the possibility of further action if necessary. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been involved in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent further conflict.

Meanwhile, opposition figures like Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s last Shah, are calling for more international pressure on Iran’s government to support the protesters. He believes the international community’s full support can help push for change.

Though sporadic protests continue in some areas, including reports of violence in Karaj, the overall atmosphere in Iran has grown quieter. The situation remains fluid, with the full scope of the unrest still unfolding.
