Iran kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign alive after securing a hard fought 0-0 draw against Belgium in Group G on Sunday in Inglewood, California. The result leaves both teams on two points after two matches and sets up a dramatic final round of group fixtures.
The star of the match was undoubtedly Alireza Beiranvand, who produced a brilliant display between the posts. The 33 year old goalkeeper made seven crucial saves, earning his second clean sheet in his seventh World Cup appearance across three tournaments. His heroics prevented Belgium from finding the breakthrough and gave Iran a valuable point.
Belgium controlled much of the game and enjoyed more possession, passing and shots on target. Despite being under pressure for long periods, Iran remained disciplined and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Iran thought they had taken the lead in the 25th minute when Mehdi Taremi cleverly rolled a set piece under the Belgium wall and into the net. However, a VAR review ruled out the goal for offside and encroachment, leaving the match level.
The game changed in the 66th minute when Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy received a red card after pulling down an Iranian attacker following a poor back pass that created a clear scoring opportunity. Even with a one man advantage, Iran struggled to control possession and could not fully capitalise.
Belgium still created the better opportunities despite having ten players. Maxim De Cuyper came close several times, including a powerful effort in the 86th minute that forced another outstanding save from Beiranvand.
The draw means both nations remain in contention for a place in the knockout stage. Belgium will face New Zealand in Vancouver, while Iran will take on Egypt in Seattle on the final day of Group G action.
With qualification still up for grabs, Iran’s resilient performance and Beiranvand’s outstanding goalkeeping have given the team hope of reaching the next round of the tournament.
