Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens has sparked controversy after endorsing Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers against progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, just days before the November 3 midterm election.

Stevens announced her endorsement on Sunday, breaking ranks with her party in a closely contested race that could influence control of the US Senate. She had previously lost a heated Democratic primary to El-Sayed in August, despite receiving backing from the party establishment.

Explaining her decision, Stevens said El-Sayed had made it clear that she was not welcome in his campaign. She described the election as extremely competitive and urged voters to support Rogers.

The Michigan Senate contest is considered a major battleground as Democrats attempt to regain control of Congress. Recent polling has placed El-Sayed narrowly ahead of Rogers, making the race particularly significant for both parties.

El-Sayed Responds to Stevens’ Endorsement

El-Sayed appeared unfazed by Stevens’ announcement, saying his focus remained on voters and policy rather than political disputes.

He emphasized that his campaign was centered on the needs of Michigan residents rather than disagreements with individual politicians.

El-Sayed has gained national attention for his progressive positions, including criticism of the US alliance with Israel and calls to halt American arms sales to the country.

If elected, he would become the first Muslim member of the US Senate, marking a historic milestone in American politics.

Democratic Leaders Condemn Stevens

Stevens’ endorsement triggered an immediate backlash among Democratic leaders and supporters.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the move as a “despicable betrayal,” while the chair of Michigan’s Democratic Black Caucus criticized Stevens for abandoning her party’s candidate.

The endorsement has highlighted growing divisions within the Democratic Party between establishment figures and progressive candidates.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump praised Stevens for what he called her bravery. Trump has repeatedly criticized El-Sayed during the campaign, making controversial remarks about his political positions and religious identity.

With election day approaching, Stevens’ endorsement has added another layer of tension to Michigan’s Senate race. The outcome could have significant consequences for the balance of power in Washington and the future direction of both political parties.
