Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged the federal government to reopen Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), saying the people of the region should not continue to suffer because of the current political situation. While addressing a large election rally in Dadyal, AJK, Bilawal stated that if Pakistan could help mediate peace between the United States and Iran and contribute to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, it should also ensure normal life is restored in Kashmir.
His remarks came as tensions continue to rise in AJK ahead of the July 27 elections. Bilawal described the upcoming polls as the most significant elections in the history of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying they would allow the people to express their democratic voice and determine the region’s future.
The PPP chairman stressed that political dialogue is the only effective solution to the ongoing unrest. He revealed that representatives of the protesters had contacted him, after which he proposed the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to resolve differences peacefully. According to Bilawal, if such a commission is formed, he would request protesters to temporarily suspend their demonstrations to create space for negotiations.
Bilawal also appealed to both the government and the protesters to avoid creating difficulties for ordinary citizens. He said blocking roads and disrupting the supply of food, medicine, and essential goods only increases public suffering. While acknowledging the government’s responsibility to maintain law and order, he argued that an entire population should not be punished for the actions of a few individuals.
He further announced that the PPP would organize a constitutional convention after the elections to discuss constitutional reforms and the future of refugee seats with public participation. Bilawal also called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to clarify the federal government’s position regarding Kashmir after recent statements made by cabinet members. He concluded by saying that the future of Kashmir belongs to its people and youth, urging voters to support the PPP in what he described as the final election involving refugee seats.
