Pakistan Peoples Party PPP leader Amjad Hussain Advocate has officially taken oath as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan following his party’s victory in the 2026 Gilgit Baltistan elections. The oath taking ceremony was held in Gilgit, where Governor Syed Mehdi Shah administered the oath in the presence of political leaders, government officials and party supporters.

Speaking after the ceremony, Chief Minister Amjad Hussain thanked the people of Gilgit Baltistan for placing their trust in the Pakistan Peoples Party. He said the party had emerged as the largest political force in the region after securing impressive results in the June 7 elections. He also appreciated the active participation of young voters and women, describing their contribution as a key factor behind the successful democratic process.

The newly elected chief minister said the public had once again given the PPP a strong mandate despite the party not being in power at the federal level. He described the relationship between the people of Gilgit Baltistan and the PPP as one built over three generations and pledged to honour the confidence shown by voters. He also highlighted the party’s historic victory in Diamer, where the PPP secured a strong mandate for the first time.

Amjad Hussain expressed gratitude to the PPP leadership for its continued support and also thanked the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML N) for backing the formation of the new provincial government. He became the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan after being elected unopposed, as no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the position.

During the ceremony, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced that local government elections in Gilgit Baltistan would be held before the arrival of winter. He stressed the importance of inclusive politics, saying the government would represent all citizens regardless of political affiliation. Bilawal also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to protecting the Indus Waters Treaty and safeguarding the country’s national interests while promoting unity and development in the region.
