The Czech Republic has secured a place in the 2026 World Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Denmark in Prague. The match ended in a tense 2-2 draw after extra time, but the Czechs held their nerve in front of their home crowd to clinch qualification.
The hero of the night was Michal Sadilek, whose decisive penalty sealed the win. This marks the Czech Republic’s first World Cup appearance since 2006, a long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage. They will now face Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea in Group A of the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in June and July.
The game was packed with drama. Pavel Sulc opened the scoring early with a stunning volley, but Denmark equalized through Joachim Andersen’s header. In extra time, Ladislav Krejci restored the Czech lead, only for substitute Kasper Hogh to level again. With the score tied, the match went to penalties. While Christian Eriksen converted for Denmark, teammates Rasmus Hojlund, Anders Dreyer, and Mathias Jensen all missed, allowing the Czechs to triumph.
Czech captain Krejci admitted, “We were not the better team, but we showed more heart and fought harder.” Coach Miroslav Koubek, visibly emotional, praised his players’ resilience, calling the qualification an outstanding success.
For Denmark, the defeat means missing their first World Cup since 2014. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic celebrates only its second appearance since becoming an independent nation in 1993. Their last outing in 2006 featured legends like Petr Cech and Pavel Nedved, but ended in a group-stage exit.
This qualification is especially sweet given the team’s struggles during the campaign, including a shock defeat to the Faroe Islands and a mid-season coaching change. Against the odds, the Czechs have reignited national pride and will now prepare to showcase their fighting spirit on the world stage.
