ISLAMABAD: PTI founder Imran Khan has reported that he has only 15% vision left in his right eye, according to a medical report submitted to the Supreme Court by court-appointed amicus curiae Salman Safdar after visiting him at Adiala Jail.
The seven-page report states that, according to Imran Khan, a blood clot caused serious damage to his eye. Despite receiving treatment, including an injection, his right-eye vision has been reduced to 15%. The court had directed Safdar to meet the former prime minister and submit findings by February 11.
Imran Khan was recently moved to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for an eye procedure, while PTI claimed that neither his family nor party leadership were informed beforehand.
According to the report, the 73-year-old former premier said he had never previously raised personal health issues, but his recent complaints were ignored by jail authorities. He stated that until October 2025, he had normal 6/6 vision in both eyes but later developed persistent blurred and hazy sight, repeatedly reporting it without response.
He later suffered a sudden complete loss of vision in the right eye. A PIMS ophthalmologist, Dr. Muhammad Arif, diagnosed a damaging blood clot.
Safdar noted that Imran appeared deeply distressed and visibly perturbed, with watery eyes and physical discomfort during the meeting. For nearly three months, he was reportedly treated only with eye drops, which did not improve his condition.
The report also highlights other medical concerns, stating that no dental consultation has been provided in two years, and regular blood tests required due to his age were not conducted. Requests to see his personal doctors, Dr. Faisal Sultan and Dr. Asim Yusuf, were also not approved.
Access to Legal Counsel and Family
Imran Khan alleged he has been denied meetings with his legal team and close family members. He told the court representative that he has multiple cases at bail, trial, and appeal stages, yet has been unable to meet his lead counsel for five months, limiting his ability to give instructions.
He also said his sisters and close relatives were not allowed visits. Only after a change in jail superintendent was he permitted to meet his wife once weekly for 30 minutes. He added that in 2025, he was allowed to speak with his sons in the UK — Qasim and Suleman — only twice by phone, despite court orders.
Daily Routine and Diet Details
The report outlines his daily jail routine, including Quran recitation, limited exercise using an exercise bike and weights, and short walking periods in a secured area. He remains confined to his cell overnight.
His breakfast includes coffee, porridge, and dates. His main meal (lunch) is family-funded and follows a weekly plan of chicken, meat, lentils, and snacks. For dinner, he usually consumes fruit, milk, and dates. Bottled water is available to him.
PTI Leadership Criticizes Authorities
Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, expressed serious concern over his health, saying authorities failed to respond to his eye condition for months. She stated that officials were repeatedly informed but took no timely action.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja called the situation a criminal act, directly accusing a former jail superintendent, and demanded immediate treatment by trusted doctors. He also urged speedy hearings in the Toshakhana and other pending cases involving Imran Khan.
