The Punjab government has announced strict new Punjab fire safety measures after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz set a 30-day deadline for the installation of fire hydrants in all commercial and high-rise buildings across the province. The decision signals a tough stance on safety compliance, with authorities warning of strict action against violators.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, where commissioners and deputy commissioners from across Punjab joined via video link. During the session, CM Maryam Nawaz approved a comprehensive fire prevention plan aimed at reducing risks in commercial and multi-storey structures.

As part of the new Punjab fire safety policy, the installation of fire hydrants has been made mandatory in all major buildings. In addition, the government approved the deployment of 1157 hydrants across nine divisions and the creation of a Fire Inspectorate Unit within Rescue 1122 to ensure enforcement and oversight.

The chief minister also ordered the use of modern high-expansion foam generators, along with compulsory smoke detectors, CCTV cameras, automatic sprinkler systems, and oxygen cylinders in large commercial facilities. First aid arrangements will also be mandatory to improve emergency response.

Specialised training programmes will be introduced for markets handling chemicals, fabric, cardboard, and gas cylinders to strengthen preparedness. CM Maryam further directed that externally ventilated staircases be installed in multi-storey buildings to ensure safe evacuation during emergencies.

Regular inspection of firefighting equipment, including expiry date checks, was also ordered. The chief minister warned that unsafe electrical wiring and substandard gas cylinders pose serious threats and directed authorities to seal non-compliant manufacturers and sellers.

Expressing condolences over the recent Gul Plaza fire tragedy in Karachi, CM Maryam said Punjab stands in solidarity with the affected families and is ready to offer assistance. She stressed that safety measures must be practical and functional, not symbolic.

Monthly mock fire drills, removal of market encroachments, and bans on storing flammable materials in basements were also ordered. Emphasising accountability, the chief minister stated that no loss of life due to negligence will be tolerated, reinforcing the seriousness of the new Punjab fire safety drive.
