Rumours about possible internet disruption in Pakistan spread rapidly on social media on Thursday, raising concerns among users across the country. Many posts claimed that internet services would face degradation or outages due to ongoing technical work. However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has categorically rejected these claims.

In an official statement shared on X, the PTA clarified that reports suggesting internet disruption on January 15 are incorrect and lack a factual basis. The authority assured users that internet services across Pakistan remain stable and fully operational.

According to the PTA, routine submarine cable maintenance is currently underway, but this activity will not impact internet connectivity. The regulator emphasised that such maintenance work is a standard process and does not result in service interruptions.

Internet speed issues and temporary disruptions have become a recurring concern in Pakistan in recent years. These problems are often linked to undersea cable maintenance, spectrum shortages, and security-related measures. Despite these challenges, authorities say steps are being taken to improve overall digital infrastructure.

Last month, the Economic Coordination Committee approved the auction of 600 MHz spectrum, a move expected to enhance internet speeds and support the future rollout of 5G services in the country. According to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index, Pakistan currently ranks low in both mobile and fixed broadband speeds.

In November 2025, Pakistan expanded its international connectivity with the launch of the SEA ME WE 6 submarine cable, significantly boosting capacity and strengthening the country’s digital economy.
