Pakistan is reportedly close to finalising a $1.5 billion defence export deal with Sudan, marking a major development in the country’s expanding role in the global arms market. Sources familiar with the negotiations say the agreement is at an advanced stage, though official confirmation from either side has not yet been issued.

The proposed deal is expected to include the supply of fighter jets, weapons systems, and other advanced military equipment. If completed, it would significantly strengthen Pakistan’s position as a growing defence exporter. Institutions such as Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and Heavy Industries Taxila have played a key role in promoting locally developed platforms, including combat aircraft, training jets, armoured vehicles, and air defence systems.

Analysts believe Sudan’s interest reflects its efforts to modernise military capabilities amid changing regional security conditions. For Pakistan, defence exports are seen as a way to increase foreign exchange earnings, build strategic partnerships, and enhance its image as a reliable defence supplier for developing nations.

Pakistan has recently secured several defence agreements with countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, highlighting defence diplomacy as an important element of its foreign policy. Officials often stress that Pakistani military exports come with training, maintenance support, and cost effective solutions, making them attractive to partner countries.

Experts caution that any defence agreement involving Sudan may attract international scrutiny due to its internal situation. Such deals usually require strict compliance with international regulations, sanctions, and end user assurances. If finalised, this agreement would rank among Pakistan’s largest defence export deals to date.
