Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled a significant development project that will reshape daily travel between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The government will construct a 25-kilometer signal-free corridor from the Islamabad Expressway to the Peshawar Road, an initiative valued at Rs30 billion. This project is being called one of the most impactful urban upgrades for the Twin Cities in recent years.
The new corridor will feature nine underpasses and three flyovers, all designed to remove traffic signals and reduce heavy congestion on the busiest routes. This upgrade aims to ensure smoother, quicker, and safer travel for the thousands of commuters who move between the two cities every day.
Officials stated that construction will begin immediately and is expected to finish by April next year, showing the government’s commitment to fast-track development. During the announcement, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the rapid progress taking place in Rawalpindi, crediting Nawaz Sharif for initiating strong development foundations in Pakistan.
The project will strengthen connectivity between key residential and commercial hubs, reduce fuel consumption, and support economic growth by easing traffic flow. It also addresses the increasing population and rising traffic pressure in the metropolitan region.
As part of a broader infrastructure vision, this signal-free corridor aims to enhance road safety, improve transport efficiency, and support long-term urban expansion. Once completed, it will offer faster and more reliable travel for millions across the Islamabad–Rawalpindi metropolitan area.
