Tarun Tejpal, the former editor-in-chief of the investigative magazine Tehelka, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Indian court after being convicted of raping a junior colleague. The case, which first came to light in 2013, once again captured national attention this week.
According to police, the incident took place in the lift of a five-star hotel in Goa during a magazine event in November 2013. Tejpal was accused of sexually assaulting a female journalist who worked under him. In 2021 a trial court in Goa had acquitted him of charges including rape, sexual harassment and wrongful restraint. The Goa government challenged that decision before the Bombay High Court. On Thursday the high court overturned the earlier acquittal and imposed the 10-year rigorous imprisonment term.
Goa Police investigator Sunita Sawant, who headed the original probe, confirmed the sentence. She said Tejpal has been given two weeks to surrender and must also pay a fine of around $5,250. The 63-year-old former editor has already stated he will appeal the conviction in the Supreme Court. He continues to claim the case is part of a long-running political vendetta.
Tejpal was first arrested in 2013 and spent seven months in jail before the Supreme Court granted him bail. At the time he described the episode as a lapse of judgement. The timing of the original accusation was significant. It emerged soon after the brutal 2012 Delhi gang rape that sparked nationwide protests and led to stronger laws against sexual violence in India.
The conviction has once again highlighted the damage the case caused to Tehelka. The magazine had built a strong reputation for investigative reporting and advocacy on social justice and women’s rights. Although it still publishes under new leadership, it never fully recovered the influence it once held.
Tejpal maintains his innocence and insists the legal battle against him has political motives linked to the state government. For now the high court order stands, and he must either surrender within the given period or continue his challenge in the country’s highest court. The outcome of any further appeal will decide whether the 10-year sentence is finally carried out.
