Israeli forces have detained more than 450 activists who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a mission delivering aid to Gaza.
The flotilla consisted of dozens of boats carrying individuals from various countries who aimed to show support for Palestinians and provide humanitarian assistance.
Among those detained are notable figures such as Pakistan’s former senator Mushtaq Ahmed, climate activist Greta Thunberg, and Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela. Their participation was meant to emphasize the importance of peace, justice, and humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.
Reports indicate that the Israeli navy intercepted 42 boats and blocked their communication systems before gaining control. Activists on board have described this action as a violation of international law, asserting that their mission was peaceful and solely aimed at assisting civilians in need.
Israeli authorities have confirmed that the detainees will be deported to Europe from the port city of Ashdod. Human rights groups have raised concerns about the treatment of activists and the legality of preventing aid from reaching Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla had attracted global attention, as it included international activists, lawmakers, and public figures uniting for a shared cause.
Their detention has ignited debates about freedom of movement, humanitarian assistance, and the ongoing situation in Gaza.
Observers believe this incident will likely increase global pressure on Israel, while also drawing more attention to the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians.
