Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a strict and immediate ban on the cutting down of trees in forests and the auctioning of timber across the province. The decision, made public on Wednesday, halts the long-standing timber auction system that has been in place for decades. This move is part of the government’s efforts to protect Punjab’s forests and curb the rapid deforestation that has been damaging the environment.

Alongside the ban, the Chief Minister has directed officials to develop a modern and transparent system for forest management. She emphasized the use of advanced tools, such as digital mapping and technology, to closely monitor forests, track illegal logging, and ensure better care of natural resources. This, she stated, will help create a more sustainable and long-lasting system.

Officials clarified that the new measures are not only about prohibiting tree cutting but also about finding a balance between development and environmental protection. The government’s goal is to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, protect natural resources, and ensure that future generations can enjoy Punjab’s green cover.

This initiative has been hailed as a major step towards protecting the environment and promoting sustainable forestry practices in the province.
