Noreen Niazi, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan, was shifted from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology after she experienced heart related discomfort. Her lawyer shared the news on Wednesday and confirmed that doctors have started initial medical tests.
Lawyer Rana Mudassar Umar stated that Noreen felt pain and unease in her heart while she remained under detention at Kot Lakhpat jail. Jail authorities immediately arranged her transfer to the specialised cardiology hospital in Lahore. Medical staff are now carrying out the first round of tests to check her condition properly.
Noreen Niazi and her sister Uzma Khan have been held under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order law since 21 September. Police took both women into custody in Lahore and later moved them to Kot Lakhpat jail. Their detention began one day after authorities arrested another sister, Aleema Khan, under the same public order law.
These arrests happened just before PTI planned a major nationwide protest. The party had announced a long march towards Islamabad on 27 September. The main demands of the protest were the release of Imran Khan and full respect for the Constitution.
The Punjab government recently extended the detention of all three sisters for another 30 days. Officials submitted a report about this extension to the Lahore High Court. Aleema Khan’s son, Shahrez Khan, had earlier challenged the detention of the three sisters in court. After reviewing the home secretary’s report that confirmed the fresh 30 day extension, the court disposed of the petition.
Noreen Niazi continues to remain under detention while she receives medical care at the cardiology hospital. Family members and party workers are closely watching her health updates. The situation has once again drawn public attention to the ongoing detention of Imran Khan’s family members and the political tension surrounding them.
Doctors are expected to share further details after completing the initial tests. Supporters hope for her speedy recovery while legal efforts regarding the detention of the three sisters continue in the background.
