LHC rejects petitions seeking the immediate suspension of detention orders against Imran Khan’s sisters. On Thursday, the Lahore High Court issued notices to the Punjab government and other respondents in response to petitions challenging the detention of Noreen Niazi and Dr Uzma Khan under the Maintenance of Public Order law.
The Lahore deputy commissioner had ordered the detention of the two sisters for 30 days under Section 3 of the MPO on September 21. This action followed a recommendation from the police. Noreen and Uzma were later moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail, where their sister Aleema Khan had been detained a day earlier.
These detentions took place just before the major opposition party’s planned nationwide protest and march on Islamabad scheduled for September 27. The march aims to demand the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the supremacy of the Constitution.
Justice Abher Gul Khan heard the petitions filed against the detention orders. Lawyers representing Noreen and Uzma requested the immediate suspension of the notifications. However, the court rejected this request at the current stage. Instead, it issued notices to the respondents and sought their replies.
Lawyer Mudassir Umar and Barrister Taimur appeared on behalf of Noreen and Uzma. Lawyer Farrukh Lodhi represented the Punjab government during the hearing.
Earlier on Sunday, Aleema was detained while leaving for a gym in Lahore. She was subsequently shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail, according to sources. Her son, Shahraiz Khan, approached the LHC to challenge the detention orders issued against his mother and her driver under the MPO.
At the September 22 hearing, the court sought arguments on the maintainability of that petition. The matter was then adjourned until September 25 for further arguments.
The developments have drawn significant attention as the PTI prepares for its major protest. Supporters continue to call for the release of the detained family members and the party founder. The court will now wait for the official responses before deciding the next steps in these cases.
