Pakistan has appointed its first-ever ambassador to Armenia after establishing formal diplomatic relations last year. Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan presented his credentials to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan at the presidential palace in Yerevan on September 11, 2026.
Ambassador Khan currently serves as Pakistan’s envoy to the United Arab Emirates and will also act as the non-resident ambassador to Armenia. This marks the first ambassadorial-level appointment since the two countries signed a joint communique in August 2025 to open diplomatic ties.
During the ceremony, the Armenian president congratulated Ambassador Khan on his new role and wished him a successful tenure. President Khachaturyan expressed his readiness to support efforts that strengthen relations between Armenia and Pakistan and expand cooperation in areas of shared interest.
Ambassador Khan conveyed warm greetings from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to building closer ties with Armenia. Both sides highlighted the good potential for greater engagement in trade, investment, education, culture, tourism and people-to-people contacts.
Earlier in Yerevan, Ambassador Khan met the Armenian foreign minister. The minister welcomed the appointment and discussed ways to broaden bilateral cooperation. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues.
He also called on Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mnatsakan Safaryan and handed over a copy of his Letters of Credence. The deputy minister described the establishment of diplomatic relations as an important decision taken by the leadership of both countries. They talked about opportunities to work together in bilateral and multilateral forums.
Pakistan and Armenia had formalised their diplomatic relations through a joint communique signed in August 2025. At that time, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and agreed to expand cooperation in several fields.
Ambassador Khan’s meetings in Yerevan have opened a new chapter in Pakistan-Armenia relations. Both sides now look forward to identifying fresh areas of mutual benefit and building a steady partnership.
