Dr Uzma Khan, sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, has filed another contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court. She claims the authorities are still not following the court’s August 18 order about her brother’s medical care and family meetings.
In the new petition, Dr Uzma says Imran Khan has not been allowed proper meetings with family members. She also states that he has not been given the chance to speak to his sons on the phone, even though the top court ordered it. According to the petition, Dr Uzma, Aleema Khan and Qasim Zaman have all been stopped from meeting the jailed PTI founder.
The petition includes extra documents and two applications asking the court to place more papers on record. Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023. His party calls the cases against him politically motivated. He was removed from power in April 2022 after a no-confidence vote and has faced many legal cases since then.
This latest move comes just two days after the Supreme Court rejected Dr Uzma’s request for an early hearing of her earlier contempt petition. That first petition was filed on August 25. It came after the government moved Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for a check-up instead of sending him to Shifa International Hospital as the court had directed.
On August 18 the Supreme Court had clearly ordered authorities to take the former premier to Shifa International Hospital for medical examination. Dr Uzma says that order has not been fully followed.
Meanwhile, a day earlier the Islamabad High Court ordered jail officials not to keep Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in solitary confinement. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro announced the decision while disposing of petitions that challenged their alleged isolation. Those petitions were filed by Aleema Khan on behalf of Imran Khan and by Mubashra Khawar Maneka, daughter of Bushra Bibi.
Dr Uzma continues to push for full compliance with the court’s directions so that her brother can receive proper medical attention and maintain contact with his family while he remains in jail.
