Karachi Police chief Azad Khan has taken serious notice of a violent scuffle between two families in Defence Housing Authority’s Khayaban e Bukhari and ordered a detailed report on the alleged misconduct of police officers seen in a viral video. The report must be submitted within three days.
Separately, DIG South Asad Raza has summoned both the involved families and the officers who appeared in the footage to his office on Monday. Sources confirmed that the officers visible in the video belonged to Korangi district. Details of the personnel have already been sought from SSP Korangi. DIG South has also directed that a forensic examination of the CCTV footage be carried out to establish the full sequence of events.
The viral video shows a woman coming down the stairs of an apartment building with uniformed police officers. She is holding a dumbbell and repeatedly strikes another woman standing outside the flat. When the victim tries to resist, the police officers restrain the woman being attacked and her companion instead of stopping the aggressor. A plainclothes individual is also seen taking an officer’s official weapon and using it to smash a CCTV camera.
The victim, Noor ul Ain, alleged that the influential woman not only assaulted her but also got her and her brother arrested. A case was registered against the siblings, though both were later granted bail within a few days. The affected family had been living in the building since November 2021. According to resident Ali Ahsan, a woman living on the fourth floor collected maintenance charges. The family had paid in advance, yet their water supply was cut off. When they installed a water tank, it was damaged. Threats to disconnect electricity were also made.
Police authorities clarified that the officers in the video did not belong to South Zone and were likely from Korangi. The double cabin vehicle seen in one of the clips was also not a South Zone police vehicle. DIG South Asad Raza confirmed that the victims were a brother and sister living with their mother and assured that the inquiry would be conducted on merit. After the incident, the affected family left the apartment and shifted elsewhere.
The incident has raised serious questions about the conduct of the officers present at the scene and the handling of the dispute. Authorities have promised a thorough probe to ensure accountability.
