The US embassy in India confirmed the agreement on Friday but did not reveal the financial value of the contract.
The Javelin is a medium-range guided missile system jointly produced by Lockheed Martin and RTX. It is designed to destroy a wide range of targets, especially armoured vehicles. The system is already in active service with the US Army and Marine Corps and has been supplied to several other countries around the world.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor welcomed the agreement. He said it opens fresh opportunities for the defence industries of both nations to cooperate more closely. “We see tremendous potential for future cooperation that strengthens the defence industrial bases of both countries,” Gor stated.
India and the United States signed a broader 10-year defence framework agreement in October. Despite recent strains in the overall relationship, including high US tariffs on Indian goods and differences over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil, the defence partnership has continued without major disruption. Washington has also maintained close contacts with Pakistan, India’s regional rival, yet military ties between India and the US remain steady.
The Indian Army will now induct the Javelin missile system, which offers advanced fire-and-forget technology. Soldiers can launch the missile and immediately take cover while the weapon independently tracks and hits its target. This capability is considered highly effective against modern tanks and fortified positions.
Officials in New Delhi have not yet issued a detailed public comment on the deal. Defence analysts view the purchase as part of India’s ongoing effort to modernise its ground forces and reduce dependence on older equipment. The move also reflects the growing strategic alignment between the two democracies in the Indo-Pacific region.
As both countries explore further joint production and technology sharing, the Javelin deal stands as a concrete example of practical cooperation. It adds a proven and battle-tested weapon to India’s arsenal while giving American defence firms a significant foothold in one of the world’s largest arms markets.
The agreement is expected to lead to more collaborative projects in the coming years, helping both sides build stronger and more self-reliant defence industrial bases.
