Pakistan and the UK have agreed to deepen their partnership on counterterrorism and related security matters. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell during his official visit to London. Both sides confirmed they will expand cooperation in intelligence sharing and other areas of mutual interest.
In the meeting, Dar pointed to Pakistan’s consistent efforts to support regional peace. He stressed the value of dialogue, de-escalation, and negotiated solutions. The two officials discussed recent developments across South Asia, the Middle East, and Afghanistan. Dar raised serious concern about terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory and the direct threat they pose to Pakistan’s security.
Earlier the same day, Dar held talks with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband. The ministers reviewed the full range of bilateral relations and decided to set up a formal mechanism for regular consultations between the two foreign ministries. This structure will help track progress and strengthen ties across political, economic, and security fields. Miliband welcomed Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting dialogue and stability in the Middle East. Dar outlined the country’s mediation efforts and the positive results achieved so far.
Discussions also covered the Indus Waters Treaty and wider regional security. Dar highlighted India’s continued violations of international obligations and called for strict adherence to treaty commitments and international law. Both sides recognised the valuable role of the Pakistani community in the United Kingdom as a living bridge that keeps people-to-people links strong.
Dar later met UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty. They explored ways to increase trade and investment, expand cooperation in emerging sectors, deepen climate collaboration, and encourage cultural exchanges. Doughty appreciated Pakistan’s contribution to regional peace and reaffirmed the UK’s desire for close engagement on both bilateral and regional issues.
The visit has reinforced the long-standing partnership between the two countries. Officials on both sides expressed confidence that sustained high-level contact will produce concrete results in security, diplomacy, and economic cooperation. Pakistan remains committed to working with the United Kingdom to address shared challenges and promote lasting stability in the region.
