FIFA has officially abandoned its controversial proposal to bring private investors into the commercial side of the FIFA World Cup after facing widespread opposition from football organizations across the globe. The decision was announced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who acknowledged that the proposal had created significant divisions within the football community.
The governing body had introduced the idea earlier in the week through a new commercial entity called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). The project was valued at $20 billion and was expected to raise up to $4.2 billion by allowing private investment in FIFA’s commercial operations, including the World Cup and the Club World Cup. FIFA argued that the initiative would provide greater financial support to its 211 member associations.
Under the proposal, every member association would have received a one time payment of $20 million in early 2027. FIFA also planned to increase its funding allocation for the 2027 to 2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million, aiming to strengthen football development worldwide.
However, the plan was met with immediate resistance. UEFA, AFC, CONCACAF, and CONMEBOL all raised concerns about allowing private investors to gain any involvement in football’s biggest tournament. UEFA strongly argued that the World Cup is not for sale and warned that European teams could boycott FIFA competitions if the proposal moved forward.
The pressure intensified after Carlos Cordeiro, a senior advisor to FIFA, resigned and described the proposal as a bad deal for football and its long term future. Political leaders also joined the criticism, with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham questioning Infantino’s leadership.
Following the growing backlash, Infantino confirmed that FIFA would withdraw the proposal. He stated that the organization had listened to the concerns of stakeholders and recognized that the project was creating unnecessary conflict. Moving forward, FIFA will focus on rebuilding unity within world football while continuing its efforts to expand and support the sport across all member nations.
The decision marks a significant policy reversal and highlights the importance of consensus when making changes that affect the future of global football.
