A new Reuters Ipsos poll shows that public support for the Iran war remains low in the United States, with only one in three Americans backing the military conflict. The survey also found that a large majority of respondents believe President Donald Trump has not clearly explained the purpose or long term goals of US involvement in the war.
According to the nationwide poll, 69% of Americans, including a significant number of Republicans, said the administration has failed to clearly communicate why the United States is engaged in the conflict. While the White House maintains that its objective is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, critics argue that the administration has presented different explanations since the war began, creating uncertainty among the public.
Despite concerns about the conflict, Trump’s overall approval rating increased slightly to 37%, three percentage points higher than the previous month. However, public backing for the war has remained below 40% throughout the conflict, making it far less popular than the early stages of previous US military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, which initially received much stronger public support.
The conflict has also affected everyday Americans through rising gasoline prices. Average fuel prices have climbed to more than $4 per gallon, compared with around $3 per gallon before the fighting began. Higher transportation costs have increased financial pressure on families and become a growing political challenge ahead of the upcoming congressional elections.
Several voters interviewed after the poll expressed confusion over the reasons for the war, with some saying the administration should place greater emphasis on solving domestic issues rather than expanding military involvement overseas. Independent voters also showed stronger support for Democratic congressional candidates, particularly on economic matters.
The Reuters Ipsos poll surveyed 1,246 US adults nationwide and reported a margin of error of three percentage points. Analysts believe the findings highlight growing public concern over the direction of US foreign policy, the economic impact of the conflict, and the need for clearer communication from the administration as the Iran war continues.
