Residents in several parts of Karachi may experience a water shortage after a power breakdown temporarily disrupted operations at the Dhabeji pumping station, the city’s primary water supply facility. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) confirmed that the disruption was caused by a cable fault, reducing the daily supply of water to the metropolitan city.
According to a KWSC spokesperson, the power outage occurred in the third phase of the Dhabeji pumping station, forcing the temporary shutdown of three major pumps. Technical teams are currently working to repair the damaged cable and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
Officials warned that the interruption could reduce Karachi’s water supply by approximately 75 million gallons per day (MGD). Since Dhabeji serves as the city’s main water distribution hub, even short power interruptions can significantly affect water availability across multiple residential and commercial areas.
The areas expected to face reduced water supply include North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and several parts of Scheme 33. Residents living in these neighbourhoods have been advised to use water carefully and avoid unnecessary consumption until the system returns to normal.
The KWSC also confirmed that it remains in close coordination with the relevant authorities to restore electricity and resume full pumping capacity. Meanwhile, K Electric clarified that the fault was located within the KDA Pumping Feeder 2 system and was not related to its external power distribution network.
This is not the first such incident to affect Karachi’s water supply. Earlier this month, another power outage at the K 2 pumping station resulted in the shutdown of three major pumps, causing temporary disruptions across several parts of the city.
Authorities have assured citizens that repair work is progressing and that water supply will gradually improve once power is fully restored. Until then, residents are encouraged to conserve water and stay updated through official announcements issued by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation.
