Former Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Wasim Khan has been appointed as the new Executive Director of FIBA Asia, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career in international sports administration. The former cricket administrator will officially assume the role in January 2027, following a transition period with the organisation.
According to FIBA Asia, Khan has already joined the regional office as Executive Director designate and has begun working closely with outgoing Executive Director Hagop Khajirian to ensure a smooth handover before taking full charge next year.
In his new role, Wasim Khan will oversee the development, governance, and administration of basketball across Asia. He will work with 44 national basketball federations, helping strengthen the sport’s growth, improve competitions, and support development programmes throughout the continent.
Khan is widely recognised for his leadership in cricket administration. Before joining FIBA Asia, he served as the General Manager of Cricket at the International Cricket Council (ICC), a position he left earlier this year. Prior to that, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board, where he played a key role in managing Pakistan cricket during an important phase of its development.
His impressive administrative journey also includes serving as Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Cricket Club in England and leading the UK based youth cricket charity Chance to Shine, where he worked to promote cricket among young people and expand participation in the sport.
The appointment represents a major career transition from international cricket to global basketball administration. It also highlights Khan’s reputation as one of the most experienced sports executives of Pakistani origin, trusted with leadership roles in multiple international sporting organisations.
With years of experience in governance, strategic planning, and sports development, Wasim Khan is expected to bring valuable expertise to FIBA Asia. His leadership is anticipated to support the continued expansion of basketball across the region while strengthening cooperation among member federations and enhancing the sport’s overall profile in Asia.
