Pakistan have suffered a significant setback ahead of their two match Test series against the West Indies after promising opener Abdullah Fazal was ruled out with a lower back injury. The 23 year old sustained the injury during a training session at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, just days before the opening Test.
According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Fazal experienced discomfort during practice and was immediately sent for an MRI scan. Medical assessments confirmed a lower back injury, and the left handed batter has been advised to begin rehabilitation. As a result, he has been declared unavailable for both the West Indies Test series and Pakistan’s upcoming three match Test tour of England, scheduled from August 19 to September 3.
The PCB added that Fazal’s replacement for both tours will be announced in the coming days. His absence is a major disappointment for Pakistan, especially after his impressive performances in the four day warm up match against the West Indies Select XI. The young opener remained unbeaten on 50 and 48 across the two innings, showing excellent form and giving the team confidence at the top of the batting order.
Fazal made his Test debut earlier this year during Pakistan’s tour of Bangladesh, where he featured in two matches. He scored 141 runs at an average of 35.25, including two half centuries, earning praise for his composed batting and solid technique. His rapid progress had made him an important part of Pakistan’s red ball plans.
Pakistan will now be forced to adjust their batting combination before the first Test begins. The current squad includes experienced names such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood, Imam ul Haq, Salman Ali Agha, and several talented bowlers who will be expected to deliver strong performances.
With a challenging overseas schedule ahead, Pakistan will hope Abdullah Fazal makes a full recovery and returns to action soon. His absence is a setback, but it also creates an opportunity for another player to step up and strengthen Pakistan’s Test side during two crucial overseas assignments.
