Train operations across Sindh were severely disrupted after a freight train derailment near Wahab Shah Railway Station in Matiari district on Sunday. According to Pakistan Railways, a total of 17 wagons of a coal hopper freight train came off the tracks while travelling from Karachi to Yousafwala, forcing authorities to suspend rail traffic on both the up and down railway lines.
Officials confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties, but the derailment caused significant damage to the railway infrastructure. Multiple sections of the railway track were damaged, making restoration work more challenging. Authorities estimate that repair work could take up to 24 hours, depending on the extent of the damage.
To speed up the recovery process, two relief trains and teams of railway engineers were dispatched to the accident site. Crews are actively removing the derailed wagons, repairing damaged tracks, and inspecting the railway line to ensure it is safe before train services resume.
The disruption has affected several major passenger trains across the province. The Karakoram Express has been stopped at Hyderabad, while the Allama Iqbal Express remains halted at Kotri. The Pakistan Express is waiting at Landhi, the Tezgam Express has been stopped at Drigh Road, and both the Millat Express and Fareed Express are currently stationed at Karachi Cantt.
Railway authorities also suspended train movement at several other stations, including Tando Adam, Hyderabad, Karachi, and Rohri, to prevent further operational issues while restoration work continues.
Sukkur Divisional Superintendent Farman Ghani stated that relief trains from Rohri and Kotri had reached the affected area to assist with recovery efforts. He added that a considerable portion of the railway track was damaged, requiring extensive repairs before normal rail operations could safely resume.
