Thousands of Egyptian football fans gathered to welcome their national team home after the Pharaohs completed the most successful FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in the country’s history. Although Egypt suffered a dramatic exit in the Round of 16, supporters celebrated the team’s remarkable achievements and unforgettable performances throughout the tournament.

Fans filled the area outside Alamein International Airport, waving Egyptian flags, singing patriotic songs, and holding banners praising the players. Many supporters carried pictures of captain Mohamed Salah with heartfelt messages thanking him for leading the team during its inspiring World Cup journey.

The celebrations continued as the squad travelled through New Alamein on an open top bus, receiving applause from thousands of cheering supporters lining the streets. The emotional homecoming reflected the pride Egyptians felt after watching their national team secure its first ever World Cup victory and reach the last 16 for the first time.

Head coach Hossam Hassan also received widespread appreciation from fans. Many displayed large posters of the coach wrapped in the Palestinian flag, acknowledging his public support for the Palestinian people throughout the tournament. Hassan repeatedly expressed solidarity during matches and media appearances, earning admiration from supporters beyond football.

Egypt’s World Cup dream ended in heartbreaking fashion after a 3 2 defeat to Argentina. The Pharaohs held a two goal advantage before conceding three late goals in the final minutes. Despite the painful loss, the team returned home as national heroes after defeating New Zealand in the group stage and eliminating Australia on penalties in the Round of 32.

Before the squad’s arrival, the Egyptian Football Association announced contract extensions for Hossam Hassan and his twin brother Ibrahim Hassan, with local reports suggesting the new agreement will run until 2030. Since taking charge in 2024, Hassan has transformed the national team, guiding Egypt to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi finals, ending an eight year absence from the World Cup, and building an impressive record of 20 wins, nine draws, and six defeats. Egypt’s memorable campaign has restored belief among supporters and created fresh optimism for future international tournaments.
