Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka booked their places in the Wimbledon third round, while Mirra Andreeva’s impressive Grand Slam run came to an unexpected end after a dramatic defeat at the All England Club.
World number one Jannik Sinner continued his title defense with a hard fought 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 victory over Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Although the Italian was not at his dominant best, he stayed composed during the key moments to secure another straight sets win. After surviving a difficult five set battle in the opening round, Sinner admitted he is still working to regain his best rhythm following a foot injury sustained earlier in the tournament.
The four time Grand Slam champion praised Borges for making the contest difficult and acknowledged that there are still areas of his game that need improvement. Sinner will now face American Jenson Brooksby in the third round as he continues his quest for another Wimbledon title.
One of the biggest surprises of the day came when French Open champion Mirra Andreeva was knocked out by experienced Czech star Barbora Krejcikova. After losing the opening set, Krejcikova fought back brilliantly to claim a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory. The former Wimbledon champion praised Andreeva’s talent and expressed her delight at winning on Centre Court.
Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka also advanced after overcoming a determined challenge from American McCartney Kessler. The world number one dominated the opening set before edging a tense second set tie break to win 6-1, 7-6 (11/9). Sabalenka will now face Jelena Ostapenko in the next round as she continues her pursuit of a first Wimbledon title.
Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic prepared for his second round clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas, aiming to keep alive his dream of winning a record 25th Grand Slam singles title. Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula also progressed to the next stage after impressive performances, while Serena Williams remained hopeful of returning for the doubles despite suffering a knee injury earlier in the tournament.
