The United States secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle on Friday. Despite the absence of star player Christian Pulisic, the co-hosts delivered another impressive performance and booked their spot in the last 32 with one group match still to play.
The Americans took control early and opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Folarin Balogun made a dangerous run down the left side before sending a cross into the box. Australian defender Cameron Burgess attempted to clear the ball but accidentally turned it into his own net, giving the United States an early advantage.
The hosts continued to dominate possession and created several chances throughout the first half. Their persistence paid off in the 43rd minute when Alex Freeman scored his first World Cup goal. After an initial offside decision, a VAR review confirmed the goal, sparking huge celebrations among the US players and coaching staff.
Australia looked more energetic after the break as coach Tony Popovic introduced attacking players Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe. However, the Socceroos struggled to break down a disciplined American defense and failed to create enough clear opportunities.
US coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his squad’s depth and emphasized that every player has an important role to play in the tournament. Freeman also highlighted the team’s strength, saying the squad can perform effectively even when key players are unavailable.
The victory moves the United States to six points in Group D and guarantees progression to the knockout rounds. The Americans will finish as group winners if Turkey fail to defeat Paraguay. Meanwhile, Australia remain on three points and must beat Paraguay in their final group match to improve their chances of advancing.
With confidence growing and several players stepping up, the United States national team looks increasingly capable of making a deep run in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
