Air India Crash Probe Faces Questions

Loading

As the first anniversary of the tragic Air India crash approaches, pilot associations and victims’ families are demanding greater transparency from India’s aviation investigation authorities. The disaster, which occurred on June 13, 2025, claimed 260 lives and remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in recent history.

The Air India Boeing 787 8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, bursting into flames and striking a medical college building. Of the 242 people onboard, only one passenger survived, while 19 people on the ground also lost their lives. The victims included citizens from India, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Canada.

Families had hoped that a final investigation report would be released before the anniversary. However, reports indicate that India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) may only publish an interim update, leaving many unanswered questions about the exact cause of the crash.

Pilot groups have criticized the investigation process, arguing that authorities have not provided enough information to the public. Aviation experts and pilot representatives say transparency is essential to restoring confidence and preventing speculation. Many believe the delay in releasing final findings has increased frustration among victims’ relatives.

A preliminary report released in July 2025 revealed that the aircraft’s fuel supply to both engines was cut off shortly before impact. While the finding raised questions about possible pilot actions, the report did not determine why the fuel switches were moved or whether a technical malfunction played a role.

Families of the deceased pilots have also challenged the preliminary conclusions, arguing that investigators should thoroughly examine all possible technical and operational causes before assigning responsibility. Some pilot organizations have urged authorities to investigate the possibility of electrical system failures and other mechanical issues.

On the anniversary of the tragedy, families, aviation experts, and legal representatives are expected to gather in Ahmedabad to honor the victims and seek clarity regarding the investigation. Many believe that a complete and transparent report is necessary not only for accountability but also for improving aviation safety standards and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
