FIFA has announced a significant change to its water bottle policy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, allowing fans to bring one factory sealed disposable plastic water bottle into stadiums across the United States and Canada. The decision comes after widespread criticism from supporters regarding the organization’s earlier ban on refillable water bottles.
Just two days before the latest announcement, FIFA had stated that reusable water bottles would not be permitted inside World Cup venues. The move raised concerns among fans, particularly because many matches are expected to be played in extremely hot weather conditions. Critics argued that restricting personal water bottles could force spectators to purchase expensive bottled water inside stadiums.
In a video message, World Cup Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi clarified the updated policy. He explained that every fan will now be allowed to carry one soft plastic disposable bottle of up to 20 ounces (590ml), provided it remains factory sealed when entering the venue.
However, FIFA maintained its ban on hard sided reusable bottles, citing security and safety concerns. According to the organization, hard containers could pose risks to players, officials, and other attendees. FIFA emphasized that similar restrictions already exist at several tournament venues and are being applied consistently across all World Cup stadiums.
The policy adjustment comes amid growing concerns about extreme heat during the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Recent research suggests that several matches could be played under conditions that create significant heat stress for players and spectators alike.
To help manage these risks, FIFA has confirmed that stadiums will feature hydration stations, cooling tents, misting areas, and additional fan cooling measures. The organization also stated that bottled water sold inside venues will be priced similarly to other events held at the respective stadiums.
The updated policy has been welcomed by many fans who viewed access to drinking water as an important health and safety issue during one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
