Football fans around the world were left concerned after Lionel Messi was forced to leave Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer match against the Philadelphia Union due to a possible injury scare. The incident happened during Miami’s thrilling 6 to 4 victory in a rain affected game at Nu Stadium.
The Argentine superstar appeared uncomfortable during the second half and was seen holding the back of his left leg before asking to be substituted in the 73rd minute. Messi walked off the field carefully and headed straight down the tunnel, raising fears among fans just weeks before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos later explained that Messi’s substitution was mainly precautionary. According to the coach, the heavy pitch conditions and physical fatigue played a major role in the decision to avoid taking unnecessary risks with the veteran forward.
Hoyos stated that there was no immediate medical report available after the match but stressed that Messi looked tired rather than seriously injured. Team mate Mateo Silvetti also admitted that players were unsure about the exact condition of the Argentine captain and hoped the issue was not serious.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has carefully managed his playing schedule to avoid injuries and maintain fitness. The eight time Ballon d’Or winner has previously dealt with hamstring problems, causing him to miss several matches over the past few seasons.
Any major injury to Messi would be a huge setback for Argentina, who are preparing to defend their World Cup title in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Argentina are scheduled to begin their campaign against Algeria on June 16.
Although Messi has not officially confirmed his participation in the tournament, he is widely expected to feature in what could become his historic sixth World Cup appearance. Fans across the globe are now eagerly waiting for positive medical updates on the football legend.
