Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump met at the White House for a high profile state visit that mixed ceremony with limited progress on major issues. The leaders and their wives attended a formal state dinner featuring sesame crusted sea bass and a guest list filled with top tech CEOs.
Trump welcomed Xi warmly and spoke of their strong personal ties. He said the two countries represent different systems but the bonds between their people remain strong. Trump even invited guests to tour the site of a new ballroom under construction and showed Xi a helipad built on the White House grounds.
Xi described the talks as in depth and said both sides reached common understanding on many issues. He called for China and the United States to act as responsible major countries and develop a new way for powerful nations to work together. Xi also stressed that competition between the two countries should remain healthy.
One of the most sensitive topics was Taiwan. According to Chinese reports Xi urged the US to oppose Taiwan independence. Trump had earlier held back a large arms package to Taiwan as a possible negotiating tool. China continues to claim Taiwan as its own territory.
Xi specifically called for regular military dialogue between the two countries. He said this would improve crisis prevention and help avoid potential conflicts. The request comes at a time of rising global concern over artificial intelligence and ongoing tensions in other regions.
Trade and technology also featured in the discussions. Xi said US companies are welcome in China and expressed hope that Chinese firms receive fair treatment in the United States. Both leaders agreed that AI development must stay under human control though deep competition in this field limits the chance of major agreements.
The summit took place in Washington even while many world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. It marked Xi’s first visit to the US capital in more than a decade and the second meeting between the two leaders this year.
Analysts noted the different styles of the two presidents. Trump focused heavily on his personal friendship with Xi while Xi spoke more carefully about the broader national relationship. Despite the friendly atmosphere and grand dinner the major disagreements on trade Taiwan AI and regional security remained largely unresolved.
