Indian authorities have launched an investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, one of the country’s most prominent religious sites. The inquiry follows claims that a significant amount of devotee donations may have been misappropriated from the temple’s funds.
The Ram Mandir, located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, was officially inaugurated in January 2024 in a high-profile ceremony attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Built at a site long associated with political and religious disputes, the temple has attracted millions of visitors and substantial public donations since its opening.
According to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to examine allegations regarding the misuse of cash offerings made by devotees. The investigation was reportedly initiated following recommendations from the trust responsible for managing the temple.
Speaking at a public event, Adityanath encouraged individuals with relevant evidence to cooperate with authorities and submit any supporting documents to the SIT. Officials have not yet confirmed the exact amount involved, but opposition leaders and several media reports suggest the alleged embezzlement could exceed $20 million.
The Ram Mandir project was reportedly completed at a cost of approximately $240 million, funded largely through donations from supporters across India and abroad. The temple continues to receive substantial daily contributions from worshippers, with donations increasing significantly during major religious occasions and festivals.
The temple stands on a site that previously housed the Babri Mosque, which was demolished in 1992 by Hindu activists. The event remains one of the most significant and controversial moments in modern Indian history. Supporters of the temple believe the site marks the birthplace of Lord Ram, a revered figure in Hinduism.
As the investigation moves forward, authorities are expected to examine financial records and donation management practices to determine whether any wrongdoing occurred. The outcome of the probe is likely to attract nationwide attention due to the temple’s religious, cultural, and political importance.
