Portugal and Spain have officially booked their places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after delivering impressive but very different performances in their Round of 32 matches. Football fans are now set for a massive clash between the two European giants.

Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in Toronto in one of the most intense matches of the tournament. The game remained tense until the final moments when Goncalo Ramos scored a stoppage-time winner with a powerful header, sending Portuguese fans into celebration.

Before that, Croatia had taken the lead in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perisic, but Cristiano Ronaldo brought Portugal back into the game with a penalty in the 68th minute. With that goal, Ronaldo became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match, adding another historic record to his legendary career.

The drama was not over, as Croatia thought they had equalised in stoppage time, but VAR ruled the goal offside, sealing Portugal’s place in the next round.

Meanwhile, Spain produced a dominant performance against Austria, winning 3-0 in Los Angeles. The Spanish side controlled the match from start to finish and did not allow Austria a single shot on target.

Mikel Oyarzabal starred with two goals, while Pedro Porro added another to complete the comfortable victory. Spain looked sharp, organized, and dangerous in attack, showing why they are among the favorites for the title.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s near-perfect display but said there is still room for improvement.

Now, football fans around the world eagerly await the blockbuster Portugal vs Spain showdown in Dallas, where Cristiano Ronaldo and his team will face one of the tournament’s strongest sides in a high-stakes battle for a quarter-final spot.
