Pakistan Railways has announced plans to introduce the country’s first high-speed bullet train between Lahore and Karachi by 2030. This major development is part of the $6.8 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) upgrade under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Currently, the train journey from Karachi to Lahore takes nearly 20 hours, but with the introduction of the bullet train, this travel time will be slashed to just five hours, offering passengers a faster and more reliable travel option.
The bullet train will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h, covering the 1,215-kilometer route. It will make stops at key cities such as Hyderabad, Multan, and Sahiwal, expanding access to high-speed rail services for more people.
Beyond just offering faster travel, the project is expected to significantly boost Pakistan’s economy. It will create employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases.
The new bullet train service will strengthen trade connections between major cities, support business expansion, and enhance overall transportation efficiency.
Another key advantage will be its impact on freight movement. By increasing the share of rail in goods transportation, the project will help reduce the reliance on road transport, which will lower fuel consumption, cut fuel imports, and save foreign exchange—all while minimizing environmental impact.
The Karachi-Lahore bullet train project is seen as a game-changer for Pakistan’s railway network, ushering in a new era of speed, growth, and economic opportunity.
