KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has successfully carried out a major operation against a cybercrime gang operating near Maskan Chowrangi in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi. The gang was involved in defrauding citizens by offering fake visas and grocery schemes, leading to significant financial losses for many unsuspecting victims.
According to reports, the suspects used fraudulent tactics to lure citizens, promising them opportunities such as visa processing and commission-based grocery deals.
They would collect substantial amounts of money from their victims, who believed the schemes to be legitimate. The suspects operated by creating fraudulent bank accounts under the names of innocent individuals, including accounts linked to a female victim. These accounts were used to launder the proceeds from their deceptive operations.
Six individuals, including Mohammad Imran, Baas, and Faisal Zafar, were arrested in connection with the scam. The authorities uncovered that the gang had systematically used stolen identities to create multiple bank accounts to facilitate their fraudulent activities. The group would extort money from victims under the false pretense of visa fees and commission for grocery deals.
This operation is part of a larger effort by Pakistan’s cybercrime units to dismantle fraudulent digital networks.
The NCCIA has been granted expanded powers to combat cybercrime, which include the ability to freeze properties linked to criminal activities, as outlined in new regulations issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior.
These measures are aimed at enhancing the agency’s capability to effectively investigate and prosecute cybercriminals.
The NCCIA is urging citizens to be cautious and report any suspicious online activities to the authorities. The agency has provided a portal for filing complaints and a dedicated helpline to assist the public in combating cybercrime.
