Mumbai is facing severe disruption after torrential monsoon rain caused widespread flooding and a tragic building collapse that claimed the lives of six people, including five children. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by aging infrastructure and extreme weather during India’s annual monsoon season.
According to city officials, the collapsed structure was a dilapidated residential building located in eastern Mumbai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene after the collapse on Sunday and worked for several hours to search through the debris for survivors. Authorities confirmed that six people lost their lives, while emergency workers continued clearing the site to ensure no one remained trapped.
The tragedy came as heavy rainfall battered Mumbai, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording more than 200 millimetres of rain within just 24 hours. Flooded roads, traffic congestion, and waterlogged neighborhoods disrupted normal life across India’s financial capital, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
In response to the worsening weather, the IMD issued a red alert, warning residents of continued heavy rain, strong winds, and the possibility of falling trees and damaged structures. Mumbai authorities also declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday to protect students and staff from dangerous travel conditions.
Mayor Ritu Tawde urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary, stressing that strong winds and continuous rainfall could create additional hazards throughout the city.
The current weather follows weeks of extreme heat and concerns over declining water reserves. Last month, officials introduced water conservation measures, reducing supplies to swimming pools and construction projects. Although the monsoon provides essential rainfall for agriculture and daily water needs, climate experts warn that climate change is making weather patterns increasingly unpredictable, resulting in more intense rainfall and frequent flooding.
With a population exceeding 20 million, Mumbai continues to face growing pressure on its infrastructure. Experts say that rapid urban development, combined with aging buildings and changing climate conditions, has increased the city’s vulnerability to disasters during every monsoon season.
