A major railway accident struck Multan early Tuesday when the Rehman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah Bridge. At least six passengers lost their lives and around thirty others suffered injuries after all fourteen coaches of the train came off the tracks. The train was heading from Karachi to Peshawar when the incident took place at approximately 5:15 in the morning.
Rescue teams reached the site quickly and began pulling passengers from the overturned coaches. Officials confirmed that thirteen coaches had been cleared while work continued on the last one. The injured were shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for urgent medical care. Local police and rescue workers remained at the scene to support the ongoing operation and secure the area.
One passenger shared that workers had repaired the nuts and bolts of coach number nine near Rohri shortly before the journey continued. The exact reason for the derailment has not been confirmed yet. Pakistan Railways and investigation teams are expected to release more information once rescue work finishes and the site is fully examined.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took immediate notice of the tragedy. He expressed deep concern for the victims and directed all concerned authorities to speed up rescue efforts. He also ordered that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment without any delay.
This accident adds to a worrying list of serious railway incidents in the country. In August 2023 the Hazara Express derailed near Nawabshah in Sindh, killing at least thirty people and injuring more than one hundred. Such repeated events have once again raised questions about track maintenance and overall railway safety standards across Pakistan.
Families of the victims and injured passengers are still waiting for complete details. Authorities continue to monitor the situation at both the accident site and the hospital. Further updates on the condition of the injured and the official cause of the derailment are expected in the coming hours as investigations move forward.
