Heavy rains continue to hit Rawalpindi and Islamabad hard, prompting the Pakistan Meteorological Department to issue a fresh flood alert for Leh Nullah. Residents in low-lying areas are being urged to stay alert as water levels keep fluctuating and more downpours are expected in the coming hours.

On Wednesday morning the PMD reported that water levels in Leh Nullah had already crossed safe limits. At Kattarian the level reached 21 feet and at Gawalmandi it stood at 16 feet around 6:30 am. Although the water receded slightly for a short time, it began rising again and was later recorded at 18 feet at Kattarian and 17 feet at Gawalmandi. Officials warned that further heavy rainfall could cause water to accumulate quickly in drains and low-lying localities, raising the risk of urban flooding.

Rainfall figures shared by the Met Office show just how intense the downpour has been. Shamsabad recorded 122 mm, Kutcheri Chowk 121 mm, Kattarian 119 mm, Pirwadhai 118 mm, while Zero Point and Bokra each received 100 mm. Saidpur saw 95 mm and Golra 94 mm. These numbers confirm that large parts of the twin cities have been under sustained heavy rain for several days.

Authorities have been asked to prepare for possible evacuations from vulnerable spots along Leh Nullah. The PMD stressed that all concerned departments must remain highly vigilant, monitor the situation closely, and be ready to take immediate precautionary steps if water levels climb further. A day earlier the department had already warned of possible urban flooding not only in Islamabad and Rawalpindi but also in Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore.

Tragedy struck in Madina Town, Shahzad Town, where a couple lost their lives after the roof of their house collapsed following three days of continuous rain. Their daughters were injured in the incident and are receiving medical care.

Meanwhile traffic police in both cities have issued safety advisories. Motorists and motorcyclists are being told to reduce speed, keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, stay in their lanes, and use fog lights when visibility drops. Helmets remain compulsory for two-wheeler riders, who should also stick to the extreme left lane and avoid sudden manoeuvres on wet roads.

With more rain still expected, residents are advised to stay updated through official channels and avoid unnecessary travel through flood-prone areas until the situation improves.
