Karachi is likely to see some light rain today even as hot and humid conditions continue to dominate the city. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast maximum temperatures between 38°C and 40°C over the next 24 hours. The minimum temperature recorded earlier was 27.5°C while humidity stayed high at 75 percent, making the weather feel sticky and uncomfortable with calm winds.
A weather analyst has pointed out that thunderstorm clouds may start forming over Karachi’s suburban areas after noon. Places such as M-9, DHA, Gadap and Dumba Goth could receive rain along with strong winds and thunderstorms. Similar conditions are also possible in Scheme 33, Malir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Port Qasim and Steel Town.
In other parts of the city the chance of light to moderate rain stands between 45 percent and 60 percent. The analyst made it clear that severe rainfall is not expected at present. Instead, the intense heat itself may trigger localised cloud formation that could bring short spells of rain.
The broader weather system is linked to a monsoon low that earlier formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Odisha coast. This system has now moved over South Chhattisgarh and nearby areas. It is expected to travel further west and is likely to bring rain and thunderstorms to several parts of Sindh until September 16.
The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority had already issued an advisory a day earlier. It urged all relevant departments to stay alert and take necessary precautionary steps during the coming weather spell. Residents are advised to remain prepared for sudden changes, especially in the outskirts where gusty winds and brief showers appear more likely.
Overall, Karachi will remain warm and muggy, but the possibility of scattered rain in the afternoon and evening offers some relief from the heat. People living in the mentioned suburban zones should keep an eye on the sky after midday as conditions can shift quickly.
