Indonesia has finalized a $9 billion defense agreement with China to acquire 42 J-10C fighter jets, a move that significantly boosts its air defense strength and marks a new era in the nation’s military modernization.
The announcement was made by Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, who confirmed that the acquisition aligns with Indonesia’s long-term goal of upgrading its air force with advanced and multi-role aircraft.
The J-10C jets, often referred to as “Rafale Killers,” are equipped with cutting-edge radar systems, precision-guided weaponry, and superior maneuverability, giving Indonesia a powerful edge in air combat and regional defense.
This deal is particularly historic as it represents Indonesia’s first-ever purchase of Chinese-built fighter aircraft. Traditionally, Indonesia has relied on defense imports from the United States, France, and Russia. The shift toward China underscores a deepening military partnership between the two Asian nations.
Funding for the project has already been approved by Jakarta’s financial authorities, with deliveries scheduled in phases over the coming years.
Defense analysts view this decision as a strategic step toward enhancing airspace security and maintaining regional balance, especially amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
By choosing the J-10C, Indonesia joins Pakistan as one of the few nations operating this advanced fighter, while China strengthens its position as a global defense exporter through technology that combines performance, affordability, and innovation.
