Indian pilot Smit Machchhar has shared a gripping account of the life-threatening attack he faced during a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Speaking from his hospital bed in Abu Dhabi, the pilot described how he fought to save the aircraft and everyone on board after being stabbed by his co-pilot.

In a nearly ten-minute video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Machchhar appeared emotional with a tube in his nose and bandages covering his head and hands. He wiped away tears while recounting the terrifying moments. “I knew that the aircraft was going down. I had fallen to the ground. I told myself that the door is right there, just open it. I managed to do it and people entered,” he said.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the co-pilot allegedly tried to crash the plane carrying 174 passengers and crew. The jet plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. Despite being covered in blood and lying on the floor, Machchhar somehow reached the cockpit door and opened it. This allowed passengers and crew to overpower the attacker. A second pair of flydubai pilots then took control and safely landed the aircraft in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar, who has been flying for 17 years and serving as a captain for the last 11 years, said he immediately understood the danger. “I have been flying for the last 17 years, have been a captain for the last 11 years. I knew that the aircraft was going down,” he explained. He firmly believes divine help played a role. “I know God saved me,” the pilot from Gujarat added.

Prime Minister Modi praised Machchhar’s courage and quick thinking. He said the pilot’s presence of mind not only saved lives but also protected the strong reputation of Indian pilots worldwide. Israeli officials confirmed that Machchhar was severely injured yet still managed to open the door, which proved decisive in preventing a disaster.

The dramatic event has drawn international attention to the bravery shown by the Indian captain. His recovery continues in Abu Dhabi as authorities investigate the motives behind the attack. Passengers and families remain grateful that the flight ended safely thanks to one pilot’s determination under extreme pressure.
