The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered the removal of Major General (retd) Hafeez-ur-Rehman from his role as the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The ruling came through a 99-page judgment authored by Justice Babar Sattar. The court directed that the Chairman’s responsibilities be assigned temporarily to another official until the government appoints a permanent replacement.
This verdict underlines the judiciary’s oversight role in ensuring accountability across key institutions. It also stresses the need for leadership appointments in regulatory bodies like PTA to be carried out in a lawful and transparent manner.
As the telecom regulator, PTA is central to managing digital connectivity, enhancing governance, and driving Pakistan’s transition toward a digital economy. Ensuring its leadership meets high standards of credibility and legality is vital for both public trust and sector growth.
