FIFA World Cup 2026 spectators will no longer be allowed to bring reusable water bottles into tournament stadiums after FIFA introduced a new policy ahead of the global football event. The decision has sparked debate among fans and health experts, especially because several matches are expected to take place in extremely hot weather conditions across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to updated stadium regulations, reusable water bottles are now prohibited inside all World Cup venues. Previously, FIFA’s guidelines permitted supporters to carry empty transparent plastic bottles with a capacity of up to one litre. However, the latest revision clearly states that reusable bottles will not be allowed inside stadium premises.
FIFA explained that the change was made to enhance fan and player safety. The organization said bottles could potentially be used in ways that might cause injuries to players, officials, or spectators. FIFA also noted that a number of host stadiums already enforce similar restrictions during other major sporting events.
Despite the ban, FIFA insists that hydration will remain a priority during the tournament. The governing body confirmed that hydration stations, cooling areas, misting stations, and fans will be available throughout stadium facilities. Bottled water will also be sold inside venues, with prices expected to remain in line with those charged during other events at the respective stadiums.
The decision has drawn criticism because experts have repeatedly warned about the impact of extreme heat during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Research published by climate specialists suggests that a significant number of matches could be played in conditions where heat stress levels are considered high. Such conditions may increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses for spectators attending games.
Concerns were also raised during the FIFA Club World Cup held in the United States last year, where many supporters reported uncomfortable temperatures while facing similar restrictions on bringing water bottles into venues.
As the tournament approaches, FIFA faces increasing pressure to balance stadium security, fan comfort, and public health concerns while ensuring a safe experience for millions of football supporters.
