Egypt’s dramatic FIFA World Cup journey ended in heartbreak after a controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16, prompting the Egyptian Football Federation (EFA) to file an official complaint against the match officials. The federation has called on FIFA to investigate the refereeing team and remove them from the remainder of the tournament, claiming several crucial decisions unfairly affected the outcome.
The controversy centered on French referee Francois Letexier, whose decisions sparked outrage among Egyptian players, coaches, and officials. During the first half, Mostafa Ziko appeared to give Egypt the lead, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review that identified a foul on Lisandro Martinez earlier in the attacking move. Despite the setback, Ziko later scored again to put Egypt 2-0 ahead, giving the Pharaohs hope of reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in their history.
However, Argentina staged a remarkable comeback. Goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi leveled the match before Enzo Fernandez netted the decisive winner. Egypt argued that the winning move should never have happened, insisting they deserved a penalty after Alexis Mac Allister allegedly pulled Hamdy Fathy inside the penalty area.
Following the match, EFA President Hany Aburida submitted a formal complaint to FIFA, accusing the officiating team of making serious mistakes and applying inconsistent standards throughout the game. The federation also criticized the VAR officials, claiming they ignored incidents that could have favored Egypt, including the disallowed goal and the unawarded penalty.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan expressed his frustration after the final whistle, stating that his team had been treated unfairly. He questioned the fairness of the officiating and suggested that external factors may have influenced the match. Hassan also hinted that there may have been a desire to keep the defending champions and Lionel Messi in the tournament.
The complaint has added another layer of controversy to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with many fans now waiting to see whether FIFA responds to Egypt’s demands for an investigation into the match officials.
