A tragic train collision near Bedford in England has left one person dead and 89 others injured, prompting a major emergency response and a full investigation into the incident. The crash occurred on Friday evening approximately 60 miles north of London when two East Midlands Railway trains collided on the same line.
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the accident at around 5:15 PM local time. Witnesses described a sudden impact that left passengers shocked and injured. Images and videos shared online appeared to show the front section of one train tangled with the rear of another, although most carriages remained upright on the tracks.
According to the East of England Ambulance Service, more than 20 ambulances and six air ambulances were deployed to assist victims. Medical teams worked quickly to assess and treat passengers at the scene before transporting the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals.
Officials confirmed that one person died at the scene, while 11 people suffered very serious injuries. Another 22 passengers sustained serious injuries, and 56 others received treatment for minor injuries. Authorities continue to monitor the condition of those hospitalized.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He praised emergency responders for their swift action during the crisis.
Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy stated that a significant emergency operation remains underway as investigators work to determine the exact cause of the crash. Transport officials and railway safety experts are expected to examine signal systems, train movements, and other operational factors.
One passenger, who identified himself as a doctor on social media, described hearing a sudden crash before realizing that part of the train had left the rails. He reported suffering only minor injuries.
