The Government of Pakistan has officially dismissed a fake notification circulating on social media that claimed a temporary suspension of all port entries across the country until March 10. The Ministry of Information clarified that no such directive was issued by either the Cabinet Division or the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, labeling the document as fabricated.
The false claim emerged amid rising regional tensions, particularly following Iran’s announcement to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil passage. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital corridor for oil exports from major producers like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the UAE, with nearly 20% of the world’s daily oil supply passing through its narrow channel.
In response to Iran’s move, Pakistan has proactively sought alternative oil supply routes. On Wednesday, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik met with Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, requesting access to the Red Sea port of Yanbu to ensure uninterrupted fuel imports. The meeting was confirmed by the Petroleum Division, which emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining energy stability despite regional disruptions.
The government’s swift rebuttal of the fake notification highlights its effort to curb misinformation during a sensitive time. Officials urged the public to rely on verified sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that could trigger panic or disrupt economic activities.
